 Why do we teach Design and Technology?

At Stanley Grove Primary Academy, we teach Design and Technology as a vital part of the National Curriculum, ensuring that all pupils develop a broad and balanced skill set that prepares them for the future. Through D&T, students explore and appreciate the world of design, drawing inspiration from various sources, including history, art, and modern innovations. This process encourages creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking as pupils learn to design, make, and evaluate their own products. By analysing and refining their work, they develop a deep understanding of how to create functional, aesthetic, and sustainable designs. These skills not only enrich their practical knowledge but also foster an appreciation for the design process and the products they encounter in everyday life.

Furthermore, Design and Technology encourages children to think independently and work collaboratively. By engaging with real-world challenges, pupils learn how to turn ideas into tangible outcomes, building resilience and adaptability along the way. D&T encourages an understanding of the impact design has on society, the environment, and the economy, empowering students to make informed choices in a rapidly changing world. Through hands-on projects, they gain confidence in using tools, materials, and technology, ultimately preparing them to contribute creatively and responsibly to the world around them.


How we teach Design and Technology 

At Stanley Grove, we teach Design and Technology by making meaningful connections to other areas of the curriculum, ensuring pupils see how design skills apply across different subjects. In addition, we celebrate diversity and inclusion by taking inspiration from designs rooted in various cultures and exploring the work of diverse artists and designers from different backgrounds. By doing so, the children gain a richer understanding of design’s global impact and significance. We also draw links to key moments in history, allowing pupils to appreciate how design has shaped and been shaped by historical events.

Each Design and Technology lesson is an opportunity for children to gain valuable insights into different designs, sparking new ideas and creativity. Pupils acquire skills that help them develop their own unique designs, whether working independently or collaboratively with their peers. By exploring a variety of materials, techniques, and problem-solving approaches, students build the confidence to experiment, think critically, and bring their ideas to life. What Design and Technology looks like at Stanley Grove?

Each project begins with looking back at previous projects and skills learned followed by an exploration of the diverse influences. The children then engage in skill-building activities where students practice the techniques required for their own creations. Once they have developed the necessary skills, the children plan and design their products, considering both functionality and aesthetics. Finally, they analyse and evaluate their work, reflecting on the effectiveness of their designs and learning from the process to improve future projects. The Threshold Concepts run as a thread throughout all units.
